2010 has been a busy year for me and though I have been too active over at twitter, I haven’t forgotten to blog hop and follow some new and interesting blogs.

Yes, in the past I nominated exactly ten blogs but this time it’ll be different – I only chose five blogs. Here goes -

1. www.libotero.com – This blog is owned and maintained by Cebu Bloggers Society’s very own, Sinjin Pineda. This travel blog offers a fresh new taste in travel and adventure. It offers episode-like entries which make readers come back for the next installment.
2. www.rabsing.com – This blog is gaining popularity all over the blogosphere. The blog is maintained by another Cebu Bloggers Society member, Rabsin de la Cruz. I knew Rabsin from Plurk and if my memory serves me right, I invited him on last year’s Digital Filipino Event. Way to go, Rabsin! Hoping for more cover songs on your blog.
3. www.cebutechblogger.com – A technology blog maintained by a tech-savvy member – Bert Padilla of the Cebu Bloggers Society. This blog offers up-to-date Tech and Internet News right into your browser.
4. everythingubec.blogspot.com – This blog offers anything and everything Cebu. Maintained by one of the pioneers of the Cebu Bloggers Society, Clado. If one is looking for what’s in and out around Cebu, head on to this blog and see what Cebu has to offer.
5. pigginoutsessions.blogspot.com – If you’re looking for something new to spice up your taste buds when you’re in Cebu, head on to this blog. Oh well, just like the rest of the blogs I nominated this blog is owned and maintained by another Cebu Bloggers Society member, Doyzkie.

There you go! Those were my Top 5 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010. Yes, the common denominator is – they’re all from Cebu, they’re all members of the infamous Cebu Bloggers Society Inc. Sounds biased? No, not really. Cheers!

In a developing country like ours, it is a fact that most of our school children do not get the proper nutrition at home and at school. Back in my elementary days we used to have Nutrition Feeding Programs and Nutrition Education Drives to further thrust the awareness of everyone, not just the kids, on how important good nutrition is. Palamantasan is a unique and one-of-a-kind inter-school competition among grade schoolers focusing on nutrition education. This Nutrition Education drive is brought to us by the country’s most-loved cheese – Kraft Cheez Whiz and the Department of Education.

The event also showcased several competitions which showed the Kids’ artistry and brilliance. Competition categories are as follows: Jarchitecture, Essay Writing Contest, Cheering Competition, Sandwich Art, and Sabayang Bigkas. Rewinding to my grade school days, I used to join and excel in writing contests but somehow along the way I lost my heart in writing. Blogging though is different. Tehee! Anyway, I used to dance for the cheering competitions too even well after grade school. Activities like these are an awesome avenue for kids to show a friendly competition.

Lapu-Lapu Central Elementary School’s Principal she said “This is an avenue for schools to showcase their grade school kids’ talents.” Indeed, Palamantasan ng Sarap is an excellent way of delivering the message – The Importance of Good Nutrition. Well, I’d have to give kudos to the Department of Education and Kraft Cheez Whiz for coming up with this good nutrition initiative. This initiative should drive everyone to take part in good and healthy nutrition, starting of course with the kids. You see, schools are our second home and what better way to start good health is at home.

Schools all over the country can register and JOIN PALAMANTASAN by clicking on the link. Whew! I should be telling my mom to have her school join too! Now, this initiative is not only limited for schools and grade schoolers because everyone will have an opportunity to Make A Pledge just by visiting the Palamantasan ng Sarap website’s Pledge Tree. The Pledge Tree is a way for everyone to show and take part in spreading the importance of good health and nutrition.

Oh well, the moment I received the invite I thought it’ll be for press launch but it was refreshing to know that we (the Cebu Bloggers) will be covering an event driving a good health and nutrition initiative. On that same Saturday, a school in Davao also simultaneously had their Palamantasan ng Sarap.  It was an event filled with colors and the presentations were well-thought-of. It was fun seeing kids of all ages participating and singing to the tune Palamantasan ng Sarap (which, by the way, can be heard on the Palamantasan Website).

In the end, we were all smiles after witnessing the grade schoolers’ awesome and raw talents.

Photo Coverage:

The event gathered almost a hundred participants from all over the country. Bloggers from Manila, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and Cebu actively participated during the event. Prominent names in the Philippine Blogosphere graced the event with sharing thoughts which, I’d say, gave light to the different opportunities available online.

Aside the from experiences shared by the speakers. Bloggers also got the chance to finally meet and greet the people behind the blogs they followed through the months or years maybe (in my case). Link-building offline, I’d say.

On a personal note, the talks shared by all of the speakers were an eye-opener. You see, I’ve been blogging for several years and yet I still have a lot to learn, thanks to the speakers! I’ve also got the chance to meet some bloggers I’ve been following since I don’t know when… though I haven’t got the chance to really talk to them but the camp made it possible for me to see the faces behind the blogs.

Aileen Apolo – de Jesus, Google Country Consultant, made an awesome discussion on Adsense basics and the use of the blogger platform. You see, I suck (sorry for the word) in using and customizing a blogger.com blog. I’ve tried several times and each and every time  I fail. Customizing the blogger platform isn’t easy for me. I’m even mocked as to why I’m dumb enough not to  know the blogger platform by heart! You see, I love customization and I’ve been using WordPress for years now. Aileen’s talk made it more appealing for me to do it again. Thanks to her presentation on blogger template designer! Let me try the blogger platform again.

Mica‘s insights on the blogging basics, I’m sure, made a lot of sense to new bloggers. She also cited some notable blogs in the Philippines as an example.  Though I haven’t really got the chance to talk to her during and after the camp, I’m glad I met her again. Come back to Cebu soon!

Vanjohnn‘s discussion on a few tips on video and photoblogging was awesome too! I’m pretty sure bloggers may now be thinking into stepping up to video and photoblogging! Cheers to you Vanjohnn!

Right before our Chicken Joy lunch, Tita Janette of the Digitalfilipino started the first half of her topic on Practical Tips on How to Become an Influential Blogger. After lunch she shared some very interesting points on how to bring your blog to the next level. So, to all bloggers…this’ll be a challenge! I’d also like to cite Tita Janette’s comprehensive Twitter updates during the camp!

Ria Jose‘s insights on utilizing the blogs for community building was another two-thumbs up! (make it for thumbs up!) I’m glad I finally met Ria during the camp. It’s been a couple years since I knew her online (I guess through Mindanao Bloggers). Too bad I didn’t get the chance to meet her cousin Andrew! (because he was a snob during the the camp! LOL! Peace).

Juned Sunido‘s discussion on ethics of blogging was pretty serious and I’m sure everyone now knows how to be a responsible blogger. Sir Juned, thank you so much! Until the next camp…Philippine Blog Awards for Visayas perhaps!?

When Jayvee Fernandez took the mic for his discussion on Marketing one’s blog, I heard a few giggles from the girls behind me. LOL. I know some of their names but I’d rather not divulge them, blogging ethics remember? Well, Jayvee’s quite a celebrity in the online world (maybe not just in online considering her appeared on a commercial). In fact, a colleague even researched about him and came across his blog and his travels. LOL.  Anyway, I was amazed by Jayvee’s presentation and it made me realize I should  be exploring the Philippines more often. His videos were mesmerizing! Thanks Jayvee, you just me or should I say us a new perspective in blogging.

Another blogging celebrity who took the stage was Tonyo Cruz. During his discussion he pointed out some tips on how to empower the blogs as a tool to deliver news. He even cited some free tools to use in delivering what-we-think-as-newsworthy. Kudos to you Tonyo!

Wilson Ng shared his knowledge in building one’s blog as a brand. He shared some very practical tips and steps to make one’s blog stand out. It was an eye-opener for me again. I’ve met Wilson Ng during the early days of the Cebu Bloggers Society at Bo’s Coffee Club near the Cebu Doctor’s Hospital.

The last speaker on the camp was Hans Koch. He discussed on the basics of WP Install in sync with SEO. I, for one, took note of his tips on how to optimize one’s blog. Though I know how to optimize but I’m tired of doing it. So, with his practical tips it sounded like everyone who’s using WordPress can easily optimize their sites. I’ve met Hans a couple of times here in Cebu but we’ve never been formally introduced. Maybe soon!?

Parting thoughts, the event was uberly successful! Kudos to the Cebu Blog Camp team who made it possible, hats off to the speakers, and cheers to all the participants who made the camp a history!

The General Assembly will also be an avenue for the bloggers to select the Board of Trustees, which will act as a decisioning arm of the society. The program will start at exactly 5pm.

The CBS Executive Heads will also discuss their reports regarding team plans which were fulfilled, plans which were not realized, and the accomplishments of CBS as a group. After this, the election of new CBS officers will be held and then the Oath Taking follows.

Unlike any other rest day, I woke up exactly 6 in the morning to the sound of my mobile phone alarm. The alarm prompted me to get up, pack up, and get ready for a weekend under the sun. In an ordinary weekend I’m still buried deep in slumberland until around 10 in the morning. Well, last weekend was uniquely different – especially the Sunday weekend.

Moving back to the Saturday prior, it was a day when I had to rendezvous with some of the people I’ve come to love (despite their attitudes – LOL) to do something for someone. It took us almost 2 hours to complete that something (Behind the scenes rocks!). And as much as I would like to detail what we were doing I might get boo-ed by these –ahem- attitude problem friends. LOL. After completing that something for someone – We, I mean I, had to hurry up and get ready for a night of free Pinoy Band Concert at SM City Cebu courtesy of MTV Exit. Unfortunately the concert ended up early because of some technical issues while Sandwich was performing upstage. Bad, too bad.

Now, moving to the amazing Sunday with the Cebu Bloggers. After packing up my stuff for a day under the scorching sun I met Kai Veloso just right outside my crib’s gate. We took a cab to Jollibee, A.S. Fortuna and rendezvoused with the rest of the bloggers. Oh well, I was not supposed to be part of this group but because I had such an amazing convincing power I was able to move my Maribago Sunday weekend from November 15^th to November 8^th and finally to October 25. LOL. Thanks Sir Ruben for accommodating my request.

Let me enumerate the cast of the amazing Sunday weekend at Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort: Ethelbert, Bryan Karl, Mikyu, Kai, Agnes, Zyra, Blair, Mark, Iggy, and of course – yours truly.

It was, I guess, past 10 in the morning when we all arrived at Maribago Bluewaters and yes we were received with a warm welcome by the resort’s staff. We went directly to the beach front expecting to swim a clean and nice sea water but sadly it was low tide and seaweeds were all over the place. You see, in Maribago Bluewater the seawater is just an option. So, the bloggers that we are went ahead and decided to take a plunge in the Garden Wing Pool which was supposed to be only for stay-in guests. Eugene, the incredible Security Personnel went ahead and gave us a quick *ahem* interview before we could take our first plunge. It took us almost 30 minutes before we were given the green signal. You see, we were guests too! Only for a day though. LOL.

We all took the plunge except for Mikyu and Zyra because they were not unable to bring the appropriate swimming outfits. Pity. Peace guys! Anyway, the plunge was perfect and the sun was shining just right. Mikyu, who (again) unfortunately did not bring a proper outfit, had to be our official photographer and videographer. Zyra, on the other hand, had to watch us with envy and I’m sure the baby inside her tummy too! LOL.

It was half past eleven when we all dived in not on the pool but on the beach front lunch buffet. We were all starving…the food choices were perfect. We all agreed – their grilled foods were wonderful. We tried all of their grilled foods – Hotdogs, Blue Marlin, Pork Barbecue, Chicken Barbecue, Squid Barbecue, etc… I couldn’t name them all, really. LOL. We also tried their mix-yourself-halo-halo, which by the way I didn’t mix myself. Haha! I had help from their food crew (I forgot the name though).

After the hearty lunch we all went to beach and attempted to cross the seawater towards Alegrado Island. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to cross because a BPO company exclusively rented the island. So, we resorted to taking wacky photos, head shots, and jump shots. Oh Noelle was there too…with her *ahem* friend.

We headed back to the pool for a plunge but I was too tired so I decided to just chill on the poolside. Oops…Iggy was tired too. This time Zyra was able to take a plunge into the pool, thanks to my extra board shorts! So, there were already 3 of us who turned out to be the photographers and videographers! – Mikyu, Iggy, and Beejing.

It was past 6 when we all headed back to the city. Though we were all tired we still had enough strength for a dinner at Matias in A.S. Fortuna. This time the cast were only: Beejing, Ethelbert, Mikyu, Bryan, Kai, and Iggy.

Luzon’s Best Blogs and Bloggers were recognized last October 9 at the PETA Theatre in Quezon City. Bloggers from different parts of the Greater Manila Area came to recognize this year’s best blogs and, of course, the bloggers. The winners for the Main Awards Categories and the Special Awards Categories were also recognized during the October 9 event. Congratulations to the Winners! You all deserved it…Hats off! And oh let me also plug Mindanao’s version of the Philippine Blog Awards 2009 on October 24 at the Pearlmont Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

Moving forward to the Visayas Spin-off of the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards, more than 50 bloggers from Cebu and its neighbouring islands came to recognize the best Visayas-based bloggers at the Ayala City Sports, Cebu Business Park. The Cebu Bloggers Society, for one, graced the event which also made it a night of prestige, laughter, and who could’ve forgotten – camwhoring.

Congratulations to the Cebu Bloggers Society for bagging the Blogger’s Choice Award. I would also like to congratulate few of my friends from CBS who won their respective awards; Sinjin: Chikka’s Readers Choice Award and the Globe Digital Tribe Award, Jorich: Globe Digital Tribe Award, McBilly: Globe Digital Tribe Award, Clado: Best Visayan Blog, and let me also congratulate blogging friends, VanJohnn a.k.a. The Photoblogger and X of ObnoxiousQueer for bagging the Globe Digital Tribe Award as well. Kudos to you guys! Again, hats off!

The Fun Side of the Philippine Blog Awards 2009 Visayas

It was a night filled with laughter, meet and greet, and of course camwhoring! Too bad I don’t have a digital camera at the moment but videos, let me say that again, PRECIOUS and HILARIOUS Videos were captured during the night. I am not so sure though if I can post it here publicly, it’s really scandalous – LOL. I couldn’t stop LOL-ing on the camwhoring moments where most of the bloggers were standing and waiting for the camera’s shutter sound. It was also a night of meet and greet. You see, when you’re a blogger you need to be online half of the time or should I say – MOST of the TIME. Thanks to the virtual world, you get to have new friends online but having to meet these friends offline is entirely different. Liberating perhaps? Haha… Anyway, it was a night full of meeting the bloggers behind the blogs we follow. After years (make it more than 2 years) of being friends online, I finally got to meet Chattee – a blogger from Davao. Thanks Chattee! See you soon…I’m sure that will not be our last meet-up. Anyhoots, though I’ve met Mica (Micamyx.com) and Ada (Adaphobic.com) during their stint here in Cebu a few months back but having a photo together (group photo, that is) was awesome! Thank you guys! (Oops…I didn’t get to tell you the F-ing Blogger’s name, the one I plurked about – remember? Haha!) I got to see Winston, Nina, and Coy too…(oops! I’m not sure if we have photos together!). Kristine Roa (StyleCebu.com), my girlfriend…Thank you for gracing the event too! It’s been eons since the last time I saw you (Where was basti anyway?), you were great on stage too, haha!

The After Party

It was almost ten in the evening when everyone (well most) left the Ayala City Sports – to party. Most of the Cebu Bloggers Society went to Cafe Shang in AS. Fortuna, Mandaue City (we were there the night before, haha!). The night was uberly fun when most, if not all, danced the night away in front of the Videoke machine. I have the videos but again I am not sure if I can post them here…haha! I have to ask permission to the people involved too. It’s scandalous. LOL. We all called it a night after ingesting 20 bottles of beer, it was 2AM.

NESCAFE 3in1 Soundskool trawls country for next generation music stars

MANDAUE CITY, Cebu, 10 October 2009 — NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool, the country’s most anticipated inter-collegiate band competition, will choose three of the best Visayas-based college bands who will perform this afternoon at the Piazza Area of Parkmall. These lucky young artists will automatically advance to the Finals stage of the competition where they will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that includes head-to-toe makeovers, one-on-one mentoring sessions with some of the country’s top bands, intensive music workshops and performances alongside their band idols on the Grand Finals Night on November 14 at the Ninoy Aquino Sports Stadium in Metro Manila.

This October, NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool is searching the entire country for the next hot, young Pinoy music stars on the road by kicking off the competition’s Regional Eliminations leg. College bands that have passed NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool’s initial screening phase will be battling each other out for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be directly mentored by some Pinoy music greats.

Last week, NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool named Mindanao’s three regional finalists in the jam-packed Atrium of Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City. After today’s Visayas regional eliminations, Luzon’s finest college will battle each other out on October 17 at the SM Baguio Event Center. Last but not least, bands from the Greater Manila Area (GMA) will battle it out on October 24 at the Activity Center of Market! Market! in Taguig City.

Thirteen lucky bands will then move on to the finals and get the opportunity to participate in the NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2009 Workshops in Boracay where they can listen to advice and insights of some of the local music industry’s top artists and business executives about how to further improve songwriting skills, ability to connect with audience, business savvy, among others. The finalists will also get to interact with their idols during teambuilding sessions and most importantly, perform live with them in mini-concerts that will be held on the island.

NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool’s Grand Prize Winner this year will receive PhP 250,000 in cash, PhP 100,000 worth of band equipment for the school they represent, and an exclusive record contract with Sony Music Entertainment Philippines.

This year’s NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool, with the theme “Huwag Na Magtago! 15 college bands showed-off their talents as they contend for the 3 spots which will give them a once-in-a-lifetime shot to fame. These college bands were amazingly artistic and not to mention talented; being part of the Visayas Leg Eliminations is already an achievement. Kudos to you guys! Rock on! Keep on believing!

Like any other competition there will always be on top of the game. The top 3 college bands who will automatically advance into the finals are the following:

• Sundae Special – Iloilo Doctors College
• Lady Suzette – AMA Computer College, Tacloban Campus
• 3 Hours and 10 – University of the Visayas

Congratulations to you guys! Well-deserved… keep on rocking!

The competition was culminated with the performances of last year’s Soundskool winner, Letter Day Story and one of the country’s top local band – 6 Cycle Mind. Letter Day Story performed their songs included in their first album, released by Sony Music Philippines, entitled Sulat, Araw, Kwento. On the other hand, 6 Cycle Mind sang their top hits and made the crowd roar to the beat!

The event was successful, I’d say. Rock on Nescafe! And ooops…we had a quick interview with the 3 winners plus an exclusive interview with Nescafe 3in1’s Marketing Executive and of course the Letter Day Story. It’ll be another story though.

On a serious note; it was fun event which, again, made me realise how talented the people from this country is. I’m glad that somehow Nescafe is giving these bands an opportunity to develop their crafts. Rock on, Nescafe! Until next year!
